The fact that you can move freely while digging is intentional, but the fact that it continues to dig even when you move away is indeed a bug. I felt it wasn't game-breaking and that I'd better deal with more important issues in the time allotted by the gamejam, so I hope it didn't spoil your game.

A nice game with beautiful arts! But a i found a little bug, when the character is digging you can move freely and the digging process will not stop.
